Civil Engineering & Infrastructure

Atkinson Peck provides Civil Engineering and Infrastructure design advice to facilitate developments of all sizes, in both the public and private sector. Such advice is provided across the full range of construction sectors including: Commercial, Education, Healthcare, Industrial, Residential, Retail & Leisure and Transportation. This can be in the form of scheme design to support planning applications or detailed design and production of construction details; indeed we are often engaged from concept through to completion.

Atkinson Peck has invested heavily in Building Information Modelling technologies (see ‘BIM’ service page), including Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite (ie Civil 3D, Revit Structure), Micro Drainage WinDes and Masterseries Engineering Software. As such we can provide the full design package for infrastructure and external works elements, whether this be for a stand-alone civil engineering project or in conjunction with structural design elements.

We are familiar with the statutory instruments and design standard appropriate to the delivery of adopted highways and drainage, in accordance with the relevant sections of the Highway Act & Water Industry Act. Typical services include the following:-

Adopted Highways

  • Liaison with the ‘Local Authority Highways Department’, to allow preparation of General Arrangement drawings and details to facilitate adoption (S38) of new Residential and Industrial Estate Roads and Highway Drainage.
  • Design of works within the existing Adopted Highway (S278).
  • Design of Highway Structures, including obtaining ‘Approval in Principle’ (AIP).
  • Traffic calming and traffic management

Adopted Drainage

  • Pre-planning consultation with the Sewage Undertaker (ie Developer Enquiry), Local Authority, and Environment Agency regarding allowable discharge rates. This is often also carried out as part of a Flood Risk Assessment.
  • Implement the adoption (S104) of both storm and foul drainage systems, including production of details for Technical Approval in accordance with ‘Sewers for Adoption’.
  • Completion of New Sewer Connection Applications (S106).
  • Works in connection with existing sewer diversion (S185) to facilitate development.
  • Obtain evidence to allow a redundant adopted public sewer to be abandoned (S116).

External Works Generally

  • Traditional storm-water and foul-water drainage design for private drainage networks, including storm simulation using WinDes software incorporating sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) as necessary.
  • Preparation of design and details for external hard-standings, including specification of floor levels, hard-standing levels, drainage falls and paving construction thickness etc.
  • Design of retaining solutions in various construction materials and forms.
  • Cut & Fill Earthworks modeling, using ‘Civil 3D’ software
  • Design large heavy duty paved areas suitable for tracking by HGV’s
  • Assessment of car aprking layouts to provide maximum occupancy.
